The Call of Duty franchise is one of the iconic giants of the shooter game world. Consisting of a number of first person shooter games, action figures, a card game and a comic book series, the franchise has been a consistent bestseller since its first release in 2003. One of its unique features has been its series of mobile games, which have had somewhat polarizing reviews across the board. The most recent mobile game in the Call of Duty franchise is Call of Duty: Mobile.
After a soft launch in July, Call of Duty: Mobile received one of the biggest video game launches on October 1st, 2019. Since its launch, the game has had generally positive reviews, and received several special mentions for its detailed graphics and intense gameplay.
Call of Duty: Mobile is currently free to play and does not require any payment before download. Like most games, Call of Duty: Mobile does have in-app purchases. You can buy Points by paying real world money, which can be used to buy some weapons, skins and style items. But if that doesn’t seem like an appealing idea to you, don’t worry. One of the best features of this game is its dual currency system. You can buy stuff using either Points or Credits. While Points need real money and are only available in the Premium Pass, you can naturally increase your Credit count through your gameplay. And thankfully, Credits are the major mode of transaction, while Points are generally for exclusive novelty weapon skins and style customizations.
Features of Call of Duty: Mobile
Call of Duty: Mobile is a multiplayer shooting game. Players can play either ranked or non ranked matches. The game has several modes and some of the best fan favorite maps from previous games like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Black Ops and Black Ops 2. There is also the famous Battle Royale mode, where up to 100 players can participate by either playing alone or forming various squads. Call of Duty: Mobile also has many of the character and weapons customizations from the previous games, which means that you can recreate your preferred loadouts to take into the game. The mobile game also has a lot of primary and secondary weapon options, so that aspect of the gameplay is similar to the main games. Basically, Call of Duty: Mobile combines some of the most famous and best loved features from the previous games in the franchise and provides a mobile gameplay that is as true to the core series as possible.
Who is it meant for?
Compared to some of the main games, Call of Duty: Mobile has been said to be easier, which makes it a good introductory option for people who are either not familiar with the Call of Duty franchise, or shooter video games in general. The game is also appealing to long time fans of the franchise, with its references to previous games and an overall faithful adaptation of the multiplayer format to the mobile platform. Another benefit of the game is that it can played completely without using real money, which makes it an excellent choice for players who want a well designed game with no paywalls.
Do you have the right system for Call of Duty: Mobile?
According to the publisher of the game, these are the minimum system requirements to install Call of Duty: Mobile:
iOS: 2 GB RAM and iOS 9
Android: 2 GB RAM and Android 5.1
However, you should note that the minimum specifications are just enough to download and install the app. They do not guarantee seamless gameplay and smooth overall functioning. To avoid such hassles, it is better to download the game on a device that has at least 6 GB of RAM, if not more, and is preferably running one of the newer versions of iOS or Android. Call of Duty: Mobile is an extremely intensive game with graphics that have a high frame rate. As such, it would be preferable to use a mobile that was designed with gamers in mind, with Super AMOLED, or similar screens and a good processor.
If your phone has a tendency to heat up during normal usage, it will definitely require a mobile cooling fan if you wan to run this game for any extended period of time. Also, unless your phone has excellent battery life, consider investing in a battery pack, if you haven’t already. Much like its desktop and console counterparts, Call of Duty: Mobile is an addictive game that tends to take up hours upon hours of the player’s time.
How and where to download Call of Duty: Mobile?
Call of Duty: Mobile is available in the Android and iOS app stores. Since the game is free to play, you can download it without providing any payment details. When you search for the game, you will also see some other Call of Duty games. However, Call of Duty: Mobile is the first, and featured, result. Make sure that the developer of the game is Activision Publishing Inc.
Storage – Before you try to install the game, make sure that you have at least 2 GB of free storage space in your phone. If you do not, you can make space by deleting caches and other rarely used or unimportant apps. If you have any other heavy video game apps on the phone, consider deleting those as well. It will make the functioning of Call of Duty: Mobile much smoother. This is largely applicable for mobiles that are not built for gaming, since they don’t usually have the processing power to run multiple video games without frequent crashes.
Installation – Depending on your internet speed, the download and installation may take some time. The App Store download amount is approximately 1.47 GB, with an additional approximate of 250 MB of resources being downloaded after the game has been installed. The installation process is extremely simple and you will get detailed instructions regarding what to do to next.
Permissions – The game also requires most of the app permissions: Storage, Record Audio, View Media and Files, etc. They are a mandatory requirement if you want to proceed to the gameplay and you cannot play the game if you do not grant these permissions. If you have not played mobile video games before and feel unsure about the necessity and of granting these permissions, it might put you more at ease to know that almost every mobile video game requires the same permissions to function on your device. Aside from the obvious storage requirement permission, Call of Duty: Mobile is a multiplayer game that requires access to your phone audio and other media.
Sign-in and play
After the installation is complete, you will need to sign in. Call of Duty: Mobile does not allow unidentified guest players, so can either sign in with your Facebook account or as a guest with an active email id.
Once the sign-up or sign in process is complete, you can either set your call sign or go with what you had before. You will then go through a bootcamp tutorial that will last approximately five to ten minutes. The tutorial is comprehensive, but since the layout of the game is different from that of the main games, it might take a few moments to get used to it. You can also set your preferred gameplay mode as either Simple or Advanced. The Advanced mode has more options and customizations than the Simple mode, and is mostly for players who are already familiar with the franchise.
Activision has a number of resources available for players of Call of Duty: Mobile. The resources include the trailer of the game, some of the main FAQs, detailed walkthroughs of the newest maps, as well as updates regarding the newest seasons and characters.
The latest season of Call of Duty: Mobile, called The Hunt, brings back one of the main antagonists of the Call of Duty franchise, Vladimir Makarov.
The game has also recently included the Terminal map from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which has long been a favorite location of many players. Play-throughs of the map have found it to be remarkably detailed for a mobile platform.
Game crashes and malfunctions
In case the game keeps crashing, it can be due to the following reasons:
- Slow or unstable internet connection
- Old or unsuitable device features
In such cases, try restarting the phone and retrying with a more stable connection. You can also try to re-install the game in extreme cases.
